Medications

Medication can be used as part of a comprehensive weight loss program to assist individuals in achieving their weight loss goals.  There are different types of weight loss medications available, and each works in a different way to help with weight management.

Semaglutide (Wegovy)

Semaglutide (Wegovy) is the first once-weekly medication in its class that’s FDA-approved to help with chronic weight management. It works best when used in combination with a healthy diet and exercise.

The largest clinical trial showed that adults taking semaglutide lost an average of almost 15% of their initial body weight.

Saxenda (Liraglutide)

Saxenda is the brand name for the GLP-1 medication Liraglutide. It was FDA-approved in 2014 for weight loss.

‍In a 56-week study, 63.2% of patients taking Saxenda lost at least 5% of their body weight (compared with 27.1% in the placebo group who did the same).
